How will France become Superior?
-France decided to colonize and to take over the French Indochina region (Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos). In order to achieve France’s goal, France believed that they must spread their culture as far as it can reach, especially over the southeast portion of Asia. Because of that, France was able to find a southern route through China to increase their trade options, natural resources that France was in need (tin, pepper, coal, cotton, and rice) and to protect their religious missions.
With the help of joining the British to fight China in the second Opium War, exploration, and defeating China in the war of 1883, France was able to gain power over Indochina.
How did France lose its imperialism in Indochina?
-By the battle of Dien Bien Phu (first Indochina War 1946-1954) and also by France declining an offer from America who would supply nuclear weapons. France, who has been vastly losing land by the Viet Minh Vietnamese Communist and Nationalist) was trying to cut nationalist supply lines into Laos and to maintain a base for sudden attacks against enemy forces. France was becoming confident in this plan after the Vietnamese cut all the roads into Dien Bien Phu, creating transportation only by air. By surprise, France was surprised when the Viet Minh surrounded the base with 40,000 men and used heavy artillery to destroy the French.
After the French loss in the battle, the French government decided to end the fighting. Soon an official settlement was agreed by both sides at the international conference in Geneva in 1954.
