Why after finally declaring something that a society yearns to achieve, one must crush and delay the envisioned dream? Samori Toure was the cause of elongating the plans of the French. After composing a strong army along with wicked plans against the French, Samori Toure refused to do what the French wanted, to establish colonies in Africa.
When the French officials peacefully decided to come into the African region, unwelcoming, Samori Toure “refused to comply with their order to simply withdraw from an important market center, Kenyeran” (Samori Touré). From then on, the French decided to stand tall and to declare war.
Samori Toure found ways to find France’s weakness which later helped him defeat France several times between 1885 and 1889. But that did not stop France. Triumphantly, France was resilient and invaded much of Toure’s empire, the Mandinka Empire. This led Samori’s empire to flee eastward which helped France’s troop to assemble in western Sudan to defeat Samori.
Even after Samori used the scorched earth tactic, wiping away all of the nations valuables which delayed France even more, France remained focused and continued to keep moving forward by seizing the town of Sikasso and got its army in the Liberian forest to prevent Samori’s army to invade.
“This time Samori’s army fought valiantly but was no match to the power of the French arsenal. Samori forced to fight a total war against a foreign invader, and fighting against all odds, was captured on September 29, 1898, in his camp in Gué(lé)mou in present-day Côte d’Ivoire. He was exiled to Gabon where he died two years later on June 2, 1900” (Samori Touré).
Consequently, after years of battling, France got to have its victory and got to see the end of Samori Toure. For this reason, Samori Touri is proven to be the cause of distracting France from getting what they truly want, glory and the need to feel superior.
